Buna High School Football- Please, Just Stop It.....

 My Facebook was full of gritchin' about the 2 point conversion at the game on Friday. 

Come on, the other team score 40+ points. Buna was sort of lucky they were still in the game. Traditionally, when a team score 40 points against you, the ballgame is over.  

What perhaps upsets me is that I don't see this kind of fire concerning what a school is supposed to supposed be about, academics. 

There were board members talking more about this, than anything other than propaganda about the school.  

Perhaps it is because there are non-Buna employees/citizens involved and are easy targets to blame? ( The referees)

The State of Texas can't get people to referee or umpire sports now. And I see why after this weekend. 

It you are so upset, go to a school and learn to umpire behind the plate, or be a volleyball line judge....They can use you.

People are losing their minds over a damn game. It's the, or should be, " The Toy Shop" of a school. 

Here are the number of kids I taught who made a long term made a pay for the rest of their life living playing a sport.

That's out of about 3700 kids I have taught in my life. 

That is 0.027% of my students in a 31 year career. 

That percentage is the same amount as I have former students who are now Jewish Rabbis.  

Buna ISD can't even it seems, fund a CTE program. I figure the chance of a kid becoming involved in the restaurant, hotel, hospitality business is far greater than a kid playing ball for a living. 

In the end whether the team goes 10-0 or 0-10 and you being on that team, an employer could care less.  Can you cook? Can you cut hair? Can you weld? Can you fix a Toyota Corolla?

The school itself is a mess.  Don't tell me otherwise. People don't want to move to Buna for the academics. Heck, folks are leaving, old Buna surnames. 

Maybe you need to work on that first.  

 

 

 

I Get Ugly With the Buna ISD This Morning.......

 I seriously had not planned to even try and think about the Buna Public Schools for a few days this morning. 

But yesterday my messages " lit up" with this text from the Buna ISD.....

In it included the following-

And it seems to have been in  the form of a " Papal Bull " from administration-

Included was the commands-

- Band and auxiliaries will no longer be able to take the 3rd quarter off to visit the concession stands. Members will be provided a meal before the game, and parents can no longer bring food or drink to their students. However, students can bring snacks if they feel they may be hungry during the game.

- Passes will be used when students need to use the restroom. Only 2 at a time.

-At home games, the band and auxiliary will be roped off not to allow people in and out.

 And it goes on.......

Charles R. Smith the Band Director at Vidor, who was the hardest, hard-ass there was in my educational career, made me look like a sissy teaching y'all, allowed us a 3rd quarter break when I was at Vidor High. 

It never caused a commotion. 

In college, we got a break after half. ( But in college in the 1970s, band members used tobacco products in the band section, and this writer may have or may not have had a pipe with old fashion Sir Walter Raleigh pipe tobacco in the baritone section.)

All I could think we was, " Let's micromanage the hell out the fun band kids might think about having."  

Trust me, this would be just a start.  More rules are coming....Or would be-

Okay, time to get ugly-

The " Papal Bull" sounds like some malarkey some former Jock or Jockett has come up with. 

They think that the only and the most important extra-curriculars are something from the athletic department.....They literally look at the band, choir, art, CTE( Blog on this tomorrow) and UIL Academics as somehow second class extra-curriculars.  Do not tell me otherwise. 

I saw it firsthand for 30+ years. 

Buna Schools had a Supt. of Schools who did everything he could to kill UIL Academics when I was there. Never mind we were sending massive numbers of kids to regional and were winning at State in Austin in several of the contests. 

The sorry piece of manure called our overnight trips to Region and State a " Vacation" for the teachers. Do you know what it is like to keep 40+ kids from getting into trouble on a trip? Making trips to CVS Drug at 2:30AM because a student had forgotten feminine products?  Or keeping male and female students from sneaking into each others rooms at 1AM? Or getting up at 4:30AM to get kids to their contest for a 6AM contest? 

They don't know, or care how many hours these kids put into their contests....Months of work. One year, in a contest, kids had to read a 700 page book on the Belgian Colonization of the Congo.....That was just to start learning what was coming for the contest....Just start. That is just one team, one contest.  

Do you know how many hours some of these band kids have practiced a trumpet or flute, or the drums?....And that is before they even marched a step.  

And trust me, Core Teachers, Math, Science, English, History at other high schools judge how serious a school is with their academics, by how well their UIL Academic Teams do at contest. Do not do squat at contest and they know, the kids in that high school ain't learning nuthin'. It's a heck of a gauge.  

This may shock some of you reading this, but getting an education is what school is supposed to be about. More kids get full academic scholarships than sports scholarships, by a long shot....Including, my son. We did not pay a nickel for his university education. 

So, apparently someone, I am guessing parents threw enough of a fit by the end of the day, the band had the 3rd quarter off again....

And Buna ISD patrons, I am going to get really ugly here, and not all members of the profession are this way, as many had kids in band, UIL, etc.....And they " get it." 

How many members of your present school board were at one time or another called " Coach?"  

 

Pay Attention to What is Going On......

 I have spoken about this in past blogs. 

And I really do not know how to put this. 

Things are going to get bad. Don't put your head in the sand and hope for the best. It might be time to get ready. 

Gas and especially diesel is going to keep getting higher in prices. I am sorry, but the fuel market is being manipulated right now, as is the stock market.  At some point manipulation is not going to work and everything is going to crash. 

Inflation is going to spiral. I am hoping it won't be like Wiemar Germany after World War 1  in which millions of Marks were needed to equal a dollar, businesses were paying their workers each day, before they worked so they could go to the store to make purchases before the prices went up 2 time, 3 times, sometimes 20+ times before noon.  

If there is anything you need, you may want to buy it now, and do not wait. 

The interest rate on homes is already looking at around 7.5% and if the Fed increases its rate in the November meeting, and they are expected, they may be well over 8, perhaps 9%.  And increase from there in 2027. 

You may want to buy a few extra canned good at the grocery. Beans, canned meats, canned potatoes. Dry good likes flour, dry beans, rice...If you are not already doing so, you may look at planting a garden with foodstuff that you can live on, not just fun stuff like peppers.....You may need to plant rows of things like Purple Hull peas. Corn, sweet potatoes and learn to can. 

My 96 year old mom was discussing the Great Depression and how they literally survived on peas, cornbread and  a little salt pork. She pondered if we are going there once again. We longing for the days when we had a steak. She sees it coming....

Now, I love Purple Hull, Cream, Crowder peas, but every day, they get old. 

I do not think you know how many farmers are on the verge of bankruptcy? And if there is now only corporate farms, what keeps them from making production low to keep profits high? A CEO on Wall Street doesn't give a damn that your kids are hungry. 

I am hoping I am way off here and some folks will get all over me for saying this, but I wonder if the church is prepared for this. Rather than build giant mausoleums to themselves, how are they helping people in the community? So often they are more concerned with what color carpet there is in the foyer, or building a new gym so we can play basketball. I do not remember Jesus playing point-guard for the Nazareth Fish-eaters......

 Then we have how many nations in this Iran Conflict who have nuclear weapons? How long before one of them decided to use one or two trying to win the war? And what keeps everyone else from using one once that Pandora's Box is opened? And what if Russia decides, lets end our war and lights-up Kiev?  

The US Bond market is a mess. We are to the point the United States is not collecting enough revenue to pay our debt. And fighting a war that appears to be never ending is accelerating this economic situation.  

I know some of you are saying...." Man, Thomas is all paranoid this morning...." 

Yes sir, yes ma'am, I am. 

The math on the economy ain't mathing, and you are not being told the entire truth, and it isn't good.  

If you are a praying person , now is the time to do so....I know for a while now I've been leading off my morning prayers talking to Jesus about it.  

   

 

 

Teachers at Buna Schools

 I hear fairly often from Buna teachers. Many times through back channels. 

Often, they are afraid that the administration will know it is them talking to me, and sometimes, all information they send me is deleted by the sender. 

And I can't say that I blame them. 

Trust me, I understand. 

It is the old phrase as one told me....

"Too many chiefs and not enough Indians." There are people who have been advanced so much, they are looking for things to do. 

So, we get micromanagement. 

If you are a teacher worth anything, you are looking for another school to work. Or, in many cases, some of the best and brightest have, " Gotten the Hell out of Dodge> " As one person who is looking to leave told me. 

Of course, this is not everyone on staff, but it is enough that people are wondering what they are doing even in education. 

I know Kerry Don Thomas would be out of Buna in 2026. The district has changed so much that I could not stand the micromanagement. I could not be the Mr. Thomas many of you had in class.

Old Kerry had a hard enough time hanging around when I reached retirement eligibility. I almost quit.....Several times my last semester.  Including me calling Teacher Retirement the Friday during Spring Break and almost pulled the trigger and retired in March. 

I'm afraid I would be teaching certain people new  combinations of adjectives, nouns, adverbs....As I walked out the door. 

But, I could not do it. Mostly because I liked the seniors I had that year.  

As I have told many times before, I was in a meeting with several teachers, administrators when one teacher's cell phone buzzes and the instructor gets up and says, " I must take this call." And they step into the hallway. About 5 minutes later, the teacher sticks their head back into the room, and says, " That was Teacher Retirement, they said I can retire." They leave, don't even go back to their classroom and gather their personal items, instead, they go, get into their car, and go home.  

True story. 

Teachers, I don't know what your situation is, but if you can change districts, and you are miserable, look for that change of scenery. I know I have in the past.  

I couldn't work in Buna ISD today.

But this is serious. 

Double check and make sure you are still registered to vote in Texas. 1.2 million people were purged off the rolls this year. 

It is the top left button.  

If you find you have been purged, click on the middle top button to register to vote. 

The last day to register to vote in this year's November elections. Is, October 5th.  

And We Have Stories from Buna ISD.....Broke? Quitting? " Runt Off?" Going Down?

 I had not planned to blog today, but you never know what might happen?

Again, I appreciate the information that I receive.  

The first story coming from people deciding that they are not going to put up with the school not following the rules. 

For years now teachers have had free lunch time. It is state law. I can remember when we faculty members had to do it. I even remember the time when I did lunch duty and well, you really can't sit down and eat. You generally have to stand and watch what was going on. And even then, there is some commotion that occurs and you have to handle it, and well, at the end of the lunch, you still have half a sandwich, all your Cheetos and a drink still unfinished. 

I've tossed more sandwiches than you know, and just saved the unopened bag of Cheetos for Tuesday. And it probably remained unopened then. 

It is alleged one of the coaches was given permanent lunch duty,  and was told to eat their lunch during the class. 

They resigned and went home. 

I can't say I blame them. 

I remember two years before I retired, I was assigned lunch duty, for all year, but I was given an extra conference period for doing so. And that's the way it should be. 

My understand is parents are upset with him leaving. Not with him, but the higher ups. It seems the man knew what he was doing and previously had gone to state. 

Then, there is the rumor of a number of coach, faculty, administration, others planning to leave at the Christmas semester break. Several others are wondering if they can make it to the end of May?

One person told me, " I can't believe I came here......" 

As one person at the school called it....." It's a shit show." 

- Second story comes from the Culinary Class. 

It seems that there was not enough funding for the kids to be able to practice cooking and supposedly, the kids were working on a computer Monday through Thursday, and were being allowed to actually cook on Friday, if they brought in the food themselves. 

The district was allegedly too poor to fund the program.   

Alas, a local church has come to the rescue and has given food to the class, so they can actually take the class. 

My question is this, did the food donated take away from the local food pantry? I know a person involved with a pantry at their church and people coming to it has increased 40% in the last 5 months. That is here in Orange County. Again, a sign of inflation and the economy. Some folks are just barely making it. 

- Finally, someone wondered if Buna athletics, academic team, with kids leaving, might go down to UIL 3A Division II next realignment cycle.  It would be hard pressed to do so, but I did not think both Vidor and Little Cypress-Mauriceville would move down either, and they did. ( Harvey contributed to both)

Realignment is in 2028, and that is a long time......Just think, that means you'd get a good old fashion ass-whopping from Newton every year if you were to move down..... 

 

 

 

 

 

Well, Buna, We Are Going There....

 Again, we want to welcome the readers at the Buna ISD Administration Building.......Or any Buna ISD administrator. 

And please, do not act like you are not reading. We know you are slipping around and are taking a peek......

It seems like every quarter I have to write this blog. 

I've had a number of people subscribe to the Substack.....And to be honest, I have not a clue who they might be. Most, I know, but others, not a clue, and I can't place them.  

So, we go over the blog, as some people still do not understand what I am doing here.  

Once again, I have a special concern with the Buna Independent School District, as I was the government/economics teacher at the high school for many years, now retired, and when I started the blog right at 16 years ago now,  and the blog while it started as a general, whatever blog, has more and more emerged into a blog concerning local issues. Especially the school.... 

 That said, I may write on anything and everything......Economics, politics, British Politics( British Politics is somewhat a hobby and pride myself as being able to discuss politics of their nation in a pub in the UK with old guys, after a pint or 5 of good British ale. And have done so....) history, religion, heck, I may write one on men's haberdashery.  

Welcome to the blog. 

Be careful, I have gotten better, but I can get a bit " salty" at times. I now have 3 clergy reading the blog regularly, that I know of. And even though I am an alumni of the Baptist seminary in Ft. Worth, and am still in good standing with a denomination with ties to Presbyterianism and the Church of Scotland, I have a hard time with organized religion. But, I try not to cuss too much and run them totally off.

The Clique and Buna Schools? Part 2

 I sometimes get information from people, well, I never suspect or expect to contact me. And this happened yesterday while I was trying to watch both the Texans and the Cowboys prove once again, neither is going to the Super Bowl this season./ 

I guess I need to go ahead and switch and quit American football, and switch to watching the football(Soccer for the uneducated) leagues out of the UK. I am pretty much there now, and on Sunday afternoon, catch a little nap....

But, that's neither here nor there.....

Yesterday, minding my own business, I receive a phone call during the game. And normally with strange phone numbers, I assume it is SPAM and ignore. This one had a 994 exchange, what is or was a landline in Buna, TX. 

My first thought was, " In 2026, who still has a landline?" ( My 95 year old mom has a cell phone.) 

And I answer.

This person is someone I would consider, well, " close to be in the clique." At least, they know some people. 

I thought I was going to get jumped on and chewed out......No, they did not.....

They were basically confirming something that I had heard earlier.  

It seems a number of individuals within the "Clique" are not happy with what is going on with Buna ISD leadership. 

The problems, they are stuck. Be it to save face, or economics( Everything boils down to money, more than you know.) or just what, they are saying, and is according to yesterday's source, " We have to figure out a way to ride this out." 

They are upset with the number of people leaving the school, and they know that the district is hemorrhaging kids.  

And here is a kicker, some in the clique are happy kids are leaving, " get rid of undesirables"  " keep the district small." 

While others are upset wanting Buna to grow, hoping to make a profit from it. 

Yeah, you are getting a Waffle House and I am not lying, I want to go about 3AM  on Saturday to WH, get some Pecan Waffles, some bacon, perhaps sausage,  and hope for a show. 

But people do not move to a community because you now have a Waffle House.  

Believe it or not, people sometimes move in due to the school district and if it is any good. 

And while there is disagreement, they actually are upset, both sides, pro-growth, anti-growth with the school district.....As the caller yesterday said.....

" The district just isn't the same place it was not that long ago...." 

 

This Made me Sad.....

 Very brief blog this morning.

I make no secret that I am attended seminary back in the day. Thought at one time I was supposed to go that way, but I keep going back to the Pauline statement....

 "  For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing."

I was sent this in my news.

The University of Edinburgh will stop offering Bachelors and Master's degrees in Divinity.  In the UK, those are the tradition degrees needed for becoming clergy.  

No one in the UK are going into the ministry.  

Edinburgh was the major divinity school for the Church of Scotland( In America, they would be called  Presbyterians and yes, just like here, there are different denominations of Presbyterians)

Just not enough students. 

I know in this country, there are churches having a difficult time finding qualified ministers. ( Had a church even approach me, I told them " I am trying to stay out of Hell now, I will pass.")

No, the divinity school remains open at the University of Glasgow, but that city is awful. You can get your throat cut there. 

443 years of offering these courses, and now no longer offering divinity degrees.  And that is why universities were first started, to train clergy. 

It makes me sad...... 

 

Buna ISD and " The Clique" ...And the Process.....Part 1

 Brief couple of paragraphs before I go into the blog.....

Here is the process of writing, and you remember, I almost write every day. It feel funny when I do not. Most blogs are written early morning, even before " Matins" or Morning Prayer as the Anglican Church would say.... 

Second, and I suspected this already.........They read the blog in the local school administration.....To which, I say, welcome, please subscribe to the new Substack page. You may as well, we all know you're reading the blog. I got a couple of Buna ISD stories I am working on, you may not want to miss... ( I knew that there are board members who read the blog, I hear their displeasure through secondary sources.)

And get ready, or actually I should  say, I should steady myself for the blowback, as the people in Buna would have you believe that their " Clique" is as mythical as Greek gods, Aliens from Outer Space, and Bigfoot...... 

But, many of you reading this know it exists, including the writer of this blog, and once employed by the Buna ISD, it took a year, but it often rose its head for things, often imagined that I had done. 

In the last fortnight, I have heard from 4 different faculty members, different campuses, all talking about the " Clique" at Buna, especially those who have infiltrated the Buna ISD. 

I understand, at least once a semester, often more, I got in trouble with a member of the " Clique."   As a " World Famous" scientist once told me, "we are jumping from one pile of manure to another." But if you ever teach school, you'll understand trouble finds you, and it doesn't take long to find. Even when you are trying to behave yourself. 

As a former Buna ISD employee said, " I know how hurtful it can be to work hard, care for the students, and still feel that you are being judged or treated differently for reasons that have nothing to do with your work." 

Another, " I worry if my 'spouse' and I can make it without my salary, but I am done, we are not to October, and I may quit at Christmas. I may get my certificate pulled, but I can no long stand the other teachers. All from Buna, who think that they are from the community, go to XYZ Church and somehow they are special." 

And my favourite. " They are from Buna, it's not like they are a bunch of Yale or Princeton grads running around here. " 

The last one, I laughed at last one, it's Buna. I make the analogy, " It is Vidor North." I know, I grew up in Vidor, you are not any better, and in someways you are worse. You still have a place called the " Quarters." 

Again, as I have said for years, Buna in many ways is stuck in 1952.

Readers- New Information

 I am in the process of setting up a Substack site/. You have got to remember, the ole Govteach is pushing 70 his next birthday and well, technology for me, is often stuck about 1980. I can do it, but I get mad doing it. 

Why Substack?

It seems everyone and their brother is setting up on Substack from Robert Pape to John Batchelor. 

I am trying to get a podcast going plus a blog. 

Yes the website is ' The Govteach Part Deaux. ' 

 I do not know if I will go there permanently,  or have both site, or even if I will have special Substack posts. 

I know the podcast will only be on Substack. But we are not there....yet. 

My nephew has been gigging me to start a podcast, and I don't know, it might be like Tim Dillon's, me ranting and raving about everything from Buna Schools, to National U.S. Politics, to the economy, to whatever I feel like. 

Be gentle, I am going to mess up starting this new adventure, more than even I know. And I am considering having "Guest Writers" on the blog.  We will see. 

So, don't get upset when you see a blog from Substack on Facebook. It is me.

Lots of Mail from Several Mad Buna, South Jasper County People......And, Calm Down

 I was somewhat surprised at the number of people looking to get their children out of Buna ISD. Just have " Had enough" with the as one person put it, "the shenanigans the district is pulling."

Some of these people I had in class when I was the gov/eco teacher at Buna, well, they never said a peep in class, and with this present " regime" as one called them,  they have become " Tiger Moms."

We here at the Compound have witness " Tiger Moms" in Far East Asia firsthand, and these SETX versions are mainly concerned with fair treatment of their children, and well, sorry Buna, in my years of association with you, you were the most political most "clique" district I was ever associated with, and while I was there, Magnolia ISD had a financial meltdown. 

And still, for some reason, I always had a love/hate relationship with the place.....

The people who sent me message are done. 

Some have already pulled their kids out hoping for a place in Evadale ISD, others, are looking at moving mid-year, if they can " just find one more spot." as one parent wrote. 

I know some of you are thinking violence is a solution, let me remind you, it'll only get you a free trip to the county hotel, and the accommodations are not like a 5-star Hyatt.  

And I know, the vast majority of you are just letting off steam. But take the high ground. Show some class, even it it is often hard to do so.....

 

Writing on Evadale? Some Buna Parents? Why do I Hate This Town?

 Brief blog for a Monday...

A source has told me, that the lower school addition to Evadale ISD will be done they are projecting for December. 

I was told that allegedly they will be able to start taking Buna kids on the waiting list. I know there are Buna parents who have pulled their kids out of the Buna Schools, homeschooling and waiting until opening become available in Evadale ISD.  

Right now, Evadale has the largest Freshman class it has ever had.....Take note Buna. You are already the smallest school in your UIL District.  

The new part of the Evadale upper school is scheduled to be done by March. Now that late will they accept students? 

- Finally, was asked in my PM's why I hated certain towns.

In truth, I am am ambivalent about most places. 

The only 3 towns that I really hate are....

Nederland- They were our band rivals back in the middle 1970s. 

Orangefield and later Winnie ( East Chambers)- They were our competition in district for UIL Academic Contests when I was at BHS.    

And at this point, I don't really care about them..... 

 

I Came So Close Buna-Ex's....A Question.......Louisiana......Britbox....Blue Bell?

 -The Computer decided I needed to listen to the " Mad Dogs and Englishmen" album this morning......All 2 hours.....Yeah, Joe Cocker can't sing, but the band Leon Russell together is worth a listen, and yeah, it was recorded live across America when I was in high school.....And yes, I have the 2 LPs.....Someplace.....

-Two classes as I have mentioned earlier had a 20th and a 30th reunion and I remembered a few people I taught being in those classes, I so wanted to show up and make fun of.....Trouble is, were they there? And how long before by Ulster-Irish Presbyterian mouth gets me into trouble? So, I stayed home and watched Tech and Houston. 

-The Question of the Day- A crossover from my Facebook site.....How many folks actually stayed and watched the band after the game?

- Apparently it was play a Louisiana school last night.....Buna, Deweyville, Evadale, and Vidor all played high schools from Louisiana.  

- For you with Britbox, Cooper and Fry is worth a watch, if only for the scenery. It takes place in the Peak District of Derby-shire, England but in reality, it is filmed in rural Ireland for tax reasons. The plots are okay and it is worth a watch.

Tuppence and Tommy on the other hand is pretty bad, that said, I don't care for the old TV versions either.  

- I keep telling you to keep and eye on Europe. I still look for Russian airstrike of some sort to hit German, Poland, France and possibly England..... Lots of rhetoric from both sides.....

- Is it just us, as has Blue Bell Ice Cream slipped? 2 of our last 3 half gallons were not up to Blue Bell standards. We got some Great Divide and it was good, but you can't really mess up vanilla or chocolate....

- Have a good weekend, don't plan to blog until next week.   

 

 

 

Well, In Truth, You Can Do Whatever.....However, You Can Show Some Class.....

 The world changes and well, I am getting old. 

I know there needs to be changes in life, especially in the schools....

But I was somewhat surprised to learn that the Bune Band was not marching at halftime of homecoming....Heck, in my town, a lot of people show up just to see the band march at half, or did.....

My senior year in high school, I remember an old guy walking behind a bunch of band students saying, " Fuck football, I am here to see the Vidor Band."

But that was 52 years ago.... 

I know they have toned it down and Charles Smith and Ronnie Touchstone are long gone, both of which I knew, but it was the thing to see when I was playing in the band.....

Yes, they crowned the Homecoming Queen none of which I remember, and did it while playing the song from the musical " South Pacific" " Some Enchanting Evening. " ( Yeah, the song was awful.) And the Homecoming Court walked off the field. 

Afterwards 

-  The stadium lights were turned off. 

- And the band stepped off to "Cyrus the Great" by K.L. King, and we had flashlights taped under our pants, to our legs with masking or duct tape.  Marching itself was simple, it was all follow the leader and you hoped the woodwind player lead knew where they were going.

- And it was followed by massive Fourth of July type fireworks blowing up over the top of the field, so load, people in Beaumont could hear the explosions.  Loud, bright, scary, and fantastic all at once, and crap falling out of the sky on top of us as we march.

- There were junior high band kids in full uniform lighting up the yard-lines that had placed flares every 10 yards on both sides of the field....

-Meanwhile about 10-12 twirlers were on the yard-lines twirling fire.    

- If that was not enough assault on your senses, there were 2 fireboards of fireworks hanging on the goal posts, that were lit turning night into day, if it was not bright enough already.

- And in typical Vidor fashion we march off the field to a 17th Century Russian Christmas Hymn....( And I see Vidor is still wearing Napoleonic War style uniforms, very similar to what the Prussian Army wore in 1815 at the Battle of Waterloo)

- There was enough smoke on the field when the lights came back on, you expect the British Royal Commandos to come running out with Lord Levitt shouting " Up the action boys!"  

You can't make this up, I dare you to try.....

And I understand, and an extravaganza today would bankrupt most schools. 

And if you remember, I played in my college marching band for 4 years, and well, it wasn't the same as high school just wasn't, and for some reason, I kept signing up for it.  ( One of those foreordained deals, I have been married to the reason for 45 years.....And I almost signed up to complete my college PE requirement playing softball, and if you really know me, you'd know how much I loved playing baseball/softball. And as I signing up, I came so close to writing down that 11AM softball course, and well, I said, maybe one more band year, make it 4 years....God works in mysterious ways.)

And I understand well, you can do what the hell ever you want to do in Buna at halftime.  

Here is what the blog is actually about.....

I know tonight most of you will be tired at the end of the ballgame. Long week, boss is an asshole, employees are nit-wits and assholes, you've been thinking since the 3rd quarter how good of a sammich that ham in the ice box would make when you get home.....

Stay another 20-30 minutes and watch the Buna Marching Band at the end of the ballgame.

The kids are working hard for the UIL Marching Contest. It is a big deal for these kids. 

You don't know how much the kids will appreciate it. 

That ham will still be waiting for you in the ice box when you get home.

I Don't Even Know Where to Start.....

 Fred came in from his morning outside romp. Smelled like smoke.....Maybe he slipped off down South Bilbo Road and smoked some filter-less Pall Malls with that Tuxedo cat that lives right behind us. He's sort of a hoodlum. 

( I wonder how many of you reading this even know what a Pall Mall Red non-filter even is?) 

I cannot keep up with the news out of the Middle East. 

The Saudis and the Yemenis are the most recent news makers. The Houthis, officially known as Ansar Allah, are a Zaydi revivalist and Shia Islamist political and military organization that emerged from Yemen in the 1990s. It is predominantly made up of Zaydis, whose namesake leadership is drawn largely from the al-Houthi family.  It traces its origins to the eighth-century teachings and rebellion of Zayd ibn Ali.

 I know, I lost you, just know,  they are a Shia group in Yemen, with ties to Iran. And is Iran is supporting them with weapons.....Which mean the Chinese are giving weapons to Houthis through Iran. 

They have been fighting with the Sunni Muslims in Saudi Arabia for centuries. 

The Sunnis are the Muslims, the royal family in Saudi Arabia. 

Right now, this group in Yemen see a weakness in Saudi Arabia and are taking advantage of it, by attacking the Saudi oil refineries, the oil field, the oil pipelines. Mostly using misslies and drones. 

If the Saudis  are not shipping/producing oil, and right now, they are not, the worldwide cost of oil, gasoline, diesel is going to rise. 

Especially diesel. 

I know many of you are going, but I drive a gas vehicle....

Trouble is, so much production and transportation in this nation runs on diesel. Or another product that is "fixing"( If I can go all East Texan) to be short in supply, aviation fuel. 

All 18-wheelers, all trains, and all nearly all, farm equipment.   

How much will products on the shelves go up as the cost of harvesting, shipping, goes up? Already they are talking about diesel going to be $10-12-15 a gallon in the USA. In Europe, they are talking $15-19. 

Heck, they are talking about gasoline being $8 gallon here in Texas. 

You want to talk about a ruined economy.  

A strong suggestion, if there are any products you may need in the future, canned good, or foods you can freeze, you may look at buying for the future. 

Likewise, you may want to keep a few extra cash dollars available. I do not know how stable the banks are going to be in the future. 

Already both Israel and the Saudis are looking to unite again the Yemenis, and in the southern portion of the Saudi peninsula it has become a ground war. Trouble is the Saudis have hired so many mercenary soldiers, if the war gets going bad, how many of the mercenaries will turn tail and leave the battlefield. 

As I write, the Saudis are bombing the Houthis and the Houthis are expanding into Saudi territory. The US is warning travelers  not to travel to that part of the Middle East. Why anyone with any sense would be going to the Middle East right now is beyond me?

Here is what scares me. 

Do not be shocked if Iran tests a nuclear weapon here in the next few months/weeks, either buying one, or with China's help, producing one. It's closer than you know. 

Get ready folks, Pandora's Box has been opened and I see no way to close it.  

 

 

 

  

 

 

Yeah Buna, Your Lazy A$$ Kid Could Have Too...But, Nepotism is Better?

 I got my butt kicked yesterday, and sometimes I need it too. 

Yeah,  I know, I started it, I need to finish it, or at least keep after it until I can no longer go. 

Let's upset some folks.

A candidate for the Texas Railroad Commission placed on his "X" or Twitter or whatever it is called this morning page a photo of University of Texas students celebrating Texas's victory over Ohio State in football this past Saturday evening. 

The picture had students wearing UT shirts, several of the kids wear cowboy hats. ( Sort of glad to see the cowboy hat come back. I have an Open Road Stetson hat in " silver belly" I need to start wearing once again in the Fall/Winter months. Look like a political consultant in Austin. )

All of the students were Asian.  

The candidate was implying that these kids were getting into Texas due to they being Asian. 

When asked, the kids had graduated from Texas high schools and were US Citizens. 

I know two kids who were/are in the same STEM ( Science Math Engineering Math )programs as these pictured kids. 

What were these kid's names? 

Hsu? Patel? Wang? 

No........Thomas. 

How'd they get into the STEM programs?

They worked their butts off. And both had jobs to help pay for expenses. 

They were studying when the kids griping about not getting into Texas were running around playing 12 hours worth of PS5....Smoking dope......Playing " Hide the hot  dog" with their boyfriend or girlfriend....And then gripe because the Asian kid had a 4.0 Grade Point Average and they had a 2.1 Barely a C average. 

But, so many of your kids take that C average, and hope their aunt or uncle or dad gets them a job with the school or business....

And we wonder why things like customer service sucks?

As one parent wrote me....

" I had to get my kids out of Buna ISD....It just isn't the same school academically like it was 15-25 years ago....." 

As one parent told me, it is going back to the old days of Buna Schools when the joke was......" All you need to do to graduate from Buna was to be able to say "TATER" and wave bye-bye....." 

 

 

It's Time to Cut Buna, Buna ISD, Southern Jasper County Loose.......

 15+ years to " Enuff." 

Just enough. 

I often wonder where I have gone wrong. I literally have cut myself off from many in the community. It's like and I often ask, " Why bother?" 

And we know that we are not going to write on topics that people will agree with. 

And we know that so many people in the community have put their heads in the sand just like an ostrich and " hope for the best" thinking that somehow it will all turn out okay, no matter in reality, it keeps getting worse and worse. And " they" literally take you for a naive, literal idiots.  

Or, you are too afraid to do anything. 

Perhaps the thing is, so many of you show your true colors concerning your children. 

The kids are just an after thought. They claim you love them, and God gave them to you, to train them to be adults, and  it is your job to take care of your kids, but that new $110,000 vehicle. That new boat, that second house at the lake, the beach, well, I need to take care of that material goods before my kid's well-being. 

And don't tell me otherwise. I've seen it. 

-I've been somewhat discouraged  and and might be time for me to step away from Buna, writing on the school district, because, well, sometimes  

After I see the only people who have signed up to run for school board are the incumbents, and because it is people already in office, and the position is uncontested, the District Clerk will cancel the election. 

I wish I could have backed someone in the election, but I cannot, I just can't. What happens when someone I back screws up royally?  I'll have to go after them, perhaps harder than one I did not support. 

After learning only incumbents were running, well, I've been pretty darn discouraged.  

Then, I was reminded of Isiah 49:4  "I have labored in vain; I have spent my strength for nothing at all; I have spent my strength for nothing at all-"

And while I am not from the community, my late Father was born and raised in Gist, my family was in the Gist area in the 1800s, and I have emotional ties and still have relations in that community.  ( I need to write a history....On my US Passport applications, when asked where your Father was Born, I always write, " Gist, Texas, USA.")

As dad said, the people in Buna proper see the people near the Orange County line as second class citizens, never mind there are some pretty good decent, moral folks who live off the Gist Road, many of which, I still call friends. ( And don't tell the "fancy folks" in Buna, if you can call them such, tell you that they don't look down on the folks out there.....)

I know Christ was discouraged and I am far from Jesus, but look at him, he was rejected by his own family and friends, especially in Nazareth.  ( Luke 4, Matthew 13, Mark 6) 

Maybe it's supposed to be this way. I have big tendencies that "  believe certain things are done for us to understand later."( John 13:7) 

Could be it is time for someone else to take up the fight....Could be, I need a break? 

We will see...... 

 

 

 

 

Special Request....I Need Some Prayers This Week......And You Need to Remind Me

 First, I need to talk about high school economics at some point. 

It has changed, and it is not the same economics as I taught you when I was still in the classroom....and it is for the bad and makes me have more questions than actual answers. 

Economics is not really what I taught. It is more personal finance. Including I was told, , they're supposed to teach you things such as how to write a check......I am a senior citizen. I cannot tell you the last time I wrote a check. Maybe 5 years ago. Perhaps longer. I think then, it was paying property taxes, even with them in 2026, we use some form of electronic transfer. I know I paid my Honda registration for the year cash, only because I had been given cash for officiating at a wedding and had the money in my billfold. ( Sorry, I've called it a billfold instead of a wallet for 70 years.)

In my opinion, economics from an academic point of view still needs to be taught. And why your parents have not spent the last 18 years teaching you how to run a household and its finances, well, my parents did, my parents parents did, and we taught Reid as he was growing up.....What happened? 

I have a theory....and it ain't good. We will write on it later with the changes to Texas high school history, government, geography, etc....Remind me to blog on this later in the next couple of weeks. 

It reminds me that I am so glad to be retired.  

- This week, Deb is having tests run at MD Anderson. Nothing new, just a follow up on a problem she has been treated for over the last few years, and the test itself is somewhat in a sensitive area. 

Prayers to the Divine the test runs smooth, that everything is still negative. That we won't have to be treated with chemo once again.  

Just going to Houston, driving to the Medical Center is not fun.

You're Crazy! This is to Disillusioned Buna ISD Patrons

 I had not planned to write today....Got up and the computer decided I need to listen to a mix of the singer Jewel and the band, Coldplay, and well, we just went with it. Then, I have this fat orange cat who has decided he needs to lay across the table between the keyboard and screen while I try and write this blog. 

Apparently he's a fan of  Coldplay. 

And I get messages all the time concerning my blogs concerning the Buna ISD. Most are pretty ugly. 

The last one told me that I am " crazy." 

To do this as long as I have, and going against the clique as it is known, I have to be somewhat " Not quite right." 

But, even as my child, I was "a little eccentric."  

Heck, I taught 17-18 year old people most of my life. It does cause a strain on you, both physically, and mentally. Talking for 7 hours a day gets tiring.....And then, having to be "out front" trying to figure out, catch what some 18 year old is about to pull all day, every day gets wearisome.  Especially mentally. 

You take on a government entity, and trust me, Buna ISD is one, and do it for 15+ years,  you get pretty thick skin. It also helps to actually believe in what you are writing about. 

Several of you have gotten blow-back from either the district or apologists for the school, and in truth,  it is to be expected. 

You have to remember the source(s) of the comments. 

Often they work for the district, or they have family/friends who collect a paycheck from the school district. 

If you're going to take on a government entity.  You are going to get to get fallout. If you get a lot like I often do, you have to look at it in this way, " Maybe I am actually doing some good." 

Keep after it, and let me reiterate. You're not going to ask these folks over for Thanksgiving dinner. You got to do what you think is right. 

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.
